The city of Braidwood, Illinois is known for its nuclear generating station called the Braidwood Nuclear Generating Station. Coal was discovered in Braidwood in 1864 when a lonely farmer went digging for water. This is all it took for Braidwood to become an instant success. The demand for coal was very high, especially in urban Chicago, so numerous companies acquired land and started to operate in the coal business. The area basically became a mining boomtown, and the coal mines were the central feature which affected the lives of residents and businesses. Braidwood did see its fair share of hardship with coal. During the warmer summer months the demand for coal went down, and this resulted in layoffs. There were also arguments over miner wages and working conditions between the miners and the owners, and these disputes sometimes led to fights and disorderly conduct among large numbers of people. The village is named after James Braidwood, a coal mining expert who was involved in developing some of the first coal mines in the area back in the 1800's. Braidwood came from Scotland and with him came numerous followers from other countries such as Germany, Ireland, Canada, Belgium, France, and Italy to name just a few. As a result, Braidwood quickly became a melting pot of ethnic diversity. Mining was pretty much the prime industry in the area until the 1950's when demand for it began to decrease and other mines sprung up in different places to take over the leftover demand, thus many of the workers migrated to these newer mine sites. Strip mining areas from the early 1900's up until 1970 now have recreational facilities upon them, such as the Braidwood Recreation Club and the North Wilmington Club. The village still honors the discovery of coal in this area with historical landmarks and the location of 39 mine shafts, along with the Fossil Ridge Library that contains some great reading material on Braidwood's mining industry. Although modern day Braidwood is now a place where families send their children to school and engage in numerous recreational activities, Braidwood's history still makes this region a popular tourist attraction.
