Back in 1837, a man by the name of Joseph Kettlestrings bought over 170 acres of land west of Chicago. This land would eventually become Oak Park. The sale of alcohol was banned in Oak Park as early as 1902, and the law did not ease up until 1973 when restaurants and hotels were allowed to begin serving alcoholic beverages. Eventually the law was eased even further, allowing certain grocery stores to sell alcohol. Oak Park is known for its gorgeous homes, divine education, and beautiful parks. Architectural designs by Frank Lloyd Wright abound throughout the village, and this has drawn numerous tourists to the area. You will also find the original birthplace home of famous author Ernest Hemingway. There is also a museum called the Ernest Hemingway Museum that draws many people. It is a great tribute to this wonderful author. Oak Park is also known for its wonderful arts programs.
