Sauk Village used to be inhabited by Native American tribes. The Potawatomi and Illinois Confederation tribes resided in this area, but the Sauk tribe from neighboring Michigan was used for the name of the Sauk Trail. Original American settlers into the area came from the Eastern seaboard with ethnic backgrounds from France, Germany and the Western part of Europe. Wave after wave of settlers came into the area, and the region began to grow. In 1847, the St. Jakob's Church was constructed. This building was actually struck by lightning two times, and after the second time the Church was relocated to near Sauk Trail and the Calumet Expressway. The name was changed over to St. James Church during World War I as a result of anti-German sentiment. A twister struck this church in 1940, and it caused severe damage to the roof of the church. In 2004, while the building was getting ready to be demolished, an ancient relic cross was discovered. This cross currently hangs in the new St. James Church, along with the original bell which dates back to the 1800's. On March 12th, 1957 Sauk Village was officially incorporated with only slightly over 50 homes in the area. The area continued to grow throughout the years, and modern day Sauk Village now has a population of 11,000 residents with over 3,000 housing units. Sauk Village is a great place to live, work, and play. Community organizations help keep residents active, and there are plenty of sports and recreational things to do in Sauk Village.
