The village of Beecher, Illinois is centrally located in the Washington Township and was once called Washington Center. In the year 1862, a man by the name of T.L. Miller came to the Washington Township. He started to purchase land and laid out a plan to breed and raise cattle. Miller had a vision that the Hereford breed of beef cattle was the wave of the future in the United States, and he was correct in his assessment. He started up a farm, raised the cattle and distributed quality Hereford beef. T.L. Miller admired Henry Ward Beecher, a famous orator and social reformer, and decided to name the village after him. Miller was a successful man, and when he heard that the Chicago, Danville, and Vincennes Railroad (CD&V RR) was expanding and coming through Beecher itself, he decided to purchase more land and then owned land on both sides of the railroad. This would help him transport product, and once the railroad was complete in 1870, Beecher started to grow rapidly. A business section eventually emerged, and the depot became the prime center for all activity. Eventually the Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad took over the CD&V RR, but it closed in the 1960's. Today, it has been restored to its original wooden structure and has become a historical landmark in Beecher.
