In 1954, Park Forest was given the honor of being called an "All-America City" as residents lent a helping hand in the development of the Rich Township High School. The same honor was again pronounced to the area in 1976 because of the suburb's open housing and racial integration. Park Forest is a wonderful place to live. The educational system is among the best. The Park Forest Plaza was a shopping center that had a historical clock tower which symbolized the pride of both the plaza and the entire village. Built in 1949, this center became a huge attraction for the locals. However, the mall did not survive due to local competition over the long run, and by 1996 retail outlets were moving to Matteson. The village ending up converting what was left of the downtown region, which the plaza pre-dominated over, into a selection of fine retail stores, a cultural arts center, a dance studio, and a movie theatre. Houses are also being built on the outskirts of downtown.
